The Felton Fire Company Auxiliary was organized in 1940 with 50 charter members. One of the first fundraisers was to chance off an automobile. The ladies even traveled to out-of-state fairs in order to sell chances. Card parties, dances and other fundraisers were also held. It did not take long for the ladies to earn a reputation for preparing and serving the ever-popular fried oyster and chicken salad dinners. The original recipes for the oysters and homemade salad dressing were perfected by some of the first members and are still used today. In the beginning, the ladies, along with the firemen, plucked the chickens for use in the salad. Even though this has changed, the tradition continues with more than fifty private banquets, wedding receptions and other functions being served each year. These are additional to the annual supper sponsored by the fire company. With only minor variations, most meals consist of the basic menu of oysters, chicken salad, dumplings, mashed potatoes, cole slaw and the ever popular string beans. Most of the time, ice cream is served for dessert.

The proceeds of the fundraisers are used to purchase kitchen equipment and supplies, as well as provide some funding to the fire company for their use in updating their equipment and building so that they may provide the best service possible to the community and fire district. One year, the auxiliary had sufficient funds to purchase a much needed replacement ambulance.

Recently several men opted to join the organization rather than join the fire company. Along with these men, the many loyal ladies and some of the members of the fire company, we are very proud and fortunate to have the manpower to be able to volunteer and promote the friendliness among the community and keep the charter members' spirit alive.
